It’s time to celebrate the weekend, arts and urban nightlife as another First Friday arrives in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia Friday, November 6.

This First Friday gets fantastical with shipwrecks, medieval magic, and talking plants. Navigate your way through dancing, cabaret, receptions and more with the always innovative offerings around the city.

Remember, beyond our picks there’s tons more action on arts corridors in Old City and Fishtown, in particular.

First Friday! Swing Dance Social

The only bug you’ll want to catch this season is the jitterbug, thanks to lessons by Society Hill Swing Dance, followed by a performance by Blackbird Society Orchestra at the Barnes. The paintings will step in on the action thanks to a short talk by Senior Director of Conservation and Chief Conservator of Paintings Barbara Buckley on dance-themed pieces in the collection.

Body Language and Under the Skin

Nonprofit InLiquid presents two openings on one block, with a group show and solo exhibition. The first constructs narrative through representations of the human body, while the latter breaks narrative down through stark imagery over neutral backgrounds.

Wandering Vietnam

It’s an opening reception meets opening of a new gallery space, celebrating the relocation of Gravy Studio & Gallery. The exhibition celebrates the everyday working routine set to the backdrop of Vietnam, while the party celebrates new working spaces set to the backdrop of food by Same Same Vietnamese Street Food and libations by Sailor Jerry.

It’s invasion of the body singers at the art museum, thanks to a cabaret performance by The Bearded Ladies that proves the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Through country and folk music, the singers will personify the lives of bitter plants, ill-treated and overly-digested.

If you’ve ever seen the tentacular spectacle of Adam Wallacavage’s chandeliers, then you know the bizarre beauty evident in his sculptural work. For the first time in years, Wallacavage presents a solo show of his photography, featuring mockup shipwrecks along mystical, timeless shorelines.
